We have committed in the beginning to find donors for 50 kids in one of the poorest neighborhoods of Kigali so that they can have hope for the future through and education. Please note, the video talks of $30 a month to sponsor a child. We have recently changed that to $40 as among other improvements, we have started a major feeding program at the school that has enabled all our sponsored children to receive far better nutritional care.
Education is the key to the future wherever you are in the world, whether that’s in Canada or thousands of miles away in Rwanda. The only trouble is that education is not always available.
Unlike Canada, schooling is not free in Rwanda and what there is, is often not of a high standard. Unfortunately it is way beyond the cost of poor Rwandan families. This means that kids from the poorest backgrounds are never given the chance to escape from the poverty that surrounds them. Instead they exist from day to day, trying to survive in places that have no proper food, water or sanitation and only the most basic housing imaginable.
It is for this reason that Rwanda YFC has set up the Kigali Christian School, aimed primarily at giving a first class education to those from backgrounds that could never aspire to such heights.
In just a few years, the school has already achieved a national reputation for excellence and currently has over 500 pupils from Grade 1 to 6, plus two years of kindergarten. However, there are three major issues.
Firstly, the school is in need of major funding to open up education in higher grades in order to allow the children to continue through their school career. Secondly, there is no government funding and due to the financial situation of the families that the school is aimed at, there is very little finance available from the children themselves. Thirdly, the school has identified a nearby village that has huge poverty issues, where they would like to offer education to children who would normally never have this opportunity.
It is for these three reasons that we have decided to partner with Rwanda YFC by creating the Elevation Sponsorship Project. We are asking donors in Canada to sponsor a child in order for them to be elevated out of poverty and to have a chance to reach the potential that every child has within them.
For just thirty dollars a month we can change a child’s life. We can provide salaries for teachers, clothing, school supplies, books, food and all that they need. For so little, we can achieve so much.
